Margaret Kilgallen was born in 1967 in Washington, D.C. and received her BA in printmaking from Colorado College in 1989. Early experiences as a librarian and bookbinder contribute to her encyclopedic knowledge of signs drawn from American folk tradition, printmaking, and letterpress. Kilgallen has a love of “things that show the evidence of the human hand.” Painting directly on the wall, Kilgallen creates room-size murals that recall a time when personal craft and handmade signs were the dominant aesthetic. Strong, independent women walking, surfing, fighting, and biking feature prominently in the artist’s compositions.
Her work has been shown at Deitch Projects and the Drawing Room in New York, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and the Luggage Store in San Francisco, the Forum for Contemporary Art in St. Louis, and the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston. Kilgallen’s work was recently presented at the UCLA/Armand Hammer Museum. She died in June 2001 in San Francisco, where she lived with her husband, Barry McGee.

Snakepunch is now being represented by Sleeping Giant gallery in Toronto. We have a bunch of shows coming up this summer from coast to coast, and with the cold months ahead of us everyone involved is busy working there butts off getting things ready.
Expect big things this year, as we are all super excited.
New Snakepunch site…. kinda.

Full site launching this month!
I’ve been listening to a lot of Leonard Cohen lately, and during a break from work I decided to make a Cohen inspired poster. This is based off of one of my favorite songs of his, and I think it turned out pretty well. I have definitely taken a step back lately when it has come to producing personal based work, but I am really enjoying getting back into the groove of it. I think I am just a much more well rounded person when I am creating, so it is definitely a nice change of pace to stay in, drink tea and work on some art.

Here is a poster I designed and illustrated for a night some friends of mine are putting together. It actually starts tomorrow at Blue Dog, here in MTL. Hopefully some of you Montreal’ers will come out and support. It’s gonna be a wicked night of Motown and cheap drinks.

Here is the poster I recently put together for the BNO reunion show. They were handscreened and limited to 45, so if you got one consider it a rare piece of BNO history. Anyways, here is the poster. It is super offensive.

Here is an article in The Financial Post about the fridge door project I was recently part of.
Check out a video of Gordie, Frank and I talking about our fridge doors that we we’re recently commissioned to do for Toronto Hydro. We are all pretty awkward dudes, and on camera even more so.
Watch the video.
This is still going on all week. Go check it out if you get a chance.

Here is my finished fridge. It got shipped off a couple weeks ago, and was being displayed this weekend. It turned out a lot different then what I initially had in mind, but I am down the outcome.

It might be a little late, but if you are in Toronto today then go check out the Junction Art Festival. Myself and some of the dudes have work being displayed. And if you are around in October then come by Sleeping Giant gallery, where Gordie and I will have some stuff up. Should be a good time.

The fridge door I’ve been working on got picked up today to be shipped back to Toronto for the Junction Art’s Festival next week. Here are a few photos of the process, and one of me eating a burrito while holding a hammer.

This is the gnarly glue that is still all over me, my room, my clothes, and anything I have been in contact with the last two days.

The pictures don’t really do it justice, but as soon as I have some better ones I will put them up. And, if anyone has been following this project I am sure you can tell it looks nothing like I initially envisioned. I went for a more collage type feel, while still keeping the original idea in mind. I think it turned out pretty good, considering anytime I have any sort of deadline for ‘art’ I wait until the very last minute. For whatever reasons I think my work turns out better when i’m put under the gun.

I love this dude like a sister. He is a wizard, so he will cast a spell on you if you don’t show up to his photo show tonight. If you live in Montreal come on out to the Emporium gallery.

Any right minded person in Montreal will be attending this.

This is tonight. Come and check it out!

So here is the first ‘layer’ of my fridge for Toronto Hydro. From what I envision this will be printed out and cover the entire front, and from there I am going to mess with paint, pens, markers, etc and go nuts over the thing. I really like the idea of having digital meets analog ‘art’, and I think it will contrast well on the look of the old vintage fridge that I am using.
Check out the on going updates here.

Drawing and ‘making stuff’ are the only things these days that keep me somewhat on point. It’s almost theraputic lately, and it’s definitely been a breath of fresh air to keep my mind off of the things that get to me and be able to create something. I’ve had this doodle lying around the house, and decided to mess with it a bit in photoshop. I’ve been kinda down lately, so being able to forget about things for even a little while is pretty refreshing.
